antimicrobial resistance, antibiotics, bacteriaAbstract
Since humans appeared on earth, they have evolved together with microorganisms that existed for a long time before. These creatures, despite being the smallest, have caused the worst diseases that decimated human populations since there is any record. To fully comprehend the success and failure of antibiotics and the emerging resistance to them, an understanding of their history, origins, evolution and functions is indispensable, as well as the main mechanisms for gene transfer in microorganisms.
