Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is the coexistence of impaired glucose tolerance, high blood pressure and alterations in lipid metabolism in the same patient. Its high prevalence and incidence in diabetic patients motivates us to investigate the risk factors that influence the appearance of kidney complications in these patients. Objectives: Identify the relationship between risk factors and kidney complications in diabetic patients with metabolic syndrome treated at the primary care clinic of Punta Gorda, Toledo district, during the year 2022. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study of cases and controls, sample obtained by simple random sampling: 234, (95% CI). The independent variables studied were divided into two groups: Sociodemographic: age, sex, race; and main risk factors and comorbidities: exposure to stress, heredity, level of physical activity; insulin use, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia and adherence to treatment. Results: The use of insulin constitutes a protective factor against the appearance of kidney complications with OR 0.46 and statistical significance for a 95% CI (0.22-0.94). Indo-Belizean patients in the sample are more likely to have renal complications, OR 2.04; heredity OR 2.83, sedentary lifestyle OR 3.45, and dyslipidemia OR 2.68 were associated with renal complications in these type of patients. Conclusions: The study of this type of population in Punta Gorda continues. Diabetic patients with metabolic syndrome have a protective factor in the use of insulin against the appearance of kidney complications.
