Abstract

Introduction: Medical referrals are often made from a unit with a lower level of complexity to one with a greater resolution capacity. Due to the characteristics of the Toledo district, the analysis of this process is essential to improve the quality of the health care services. Objectives: To describe medical referrals according to socio-demographic variables, and to determine the most common medical causes of them. Methods: Descriptive, retrospective study on medical referrals in the Toledo district between 2015 and 2023. Results: In the 9 years included in the study, around 486 medical referrals were made annually; the first four years of the study were found to be above average. 77.4% of medical referrals corresponded to the female sex, and young adults were the most referred (69.1%). 58% of the referrals were obstetric-gynecological cases, and 96.1% were made to the Southern Regional Hospital. The most frequent reason for referral was "for specialists to take over management." Conclusions: In this pioneering study on the subject, the majority of referred patients were young women, and almost all were referred to the corresponding regional hospital. The most common referral specialty was to obstetric-gynecological services.
