Introduction: The figures of very low birth weight newborns have been increasing. These neonates require special care to solve complex problems and achieve their survival. Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital acts as the only institution in Belize responsible for the care of newborns weighing less than 1500 grams. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study that included all newborns weighing less than 1500 grams and gestational age less than 37 weeks, admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital from February 2022 to February 2023. Results: Overall survival was 72.1%. The neonates with the highest survival were those born after 32 weeks of gestation (82.4%). The majority of survivors corresponded to the group weighing between 1000 and 1499 grams (44/55 for 80%) and were female, with 77.5% of the total. Survival was higher in patients with no identified risk of prenatal sepsis (84.3%) and in children of mothers who received treatment with prenatal steroids (83.4%). The worst survival (54.5%) was in those who developed intraventricular hemorrhage. Conclusions: Overall survival was classified as good. The best results were in patients without prenatal risk factors, with higher gestational age and birth weight. The first cause of death was intraventricular hemorrhage. It is essential to develop comprehensive prevention actions from the prenatal stage.
