The criteria regarding the intestinal ecosystem and the intestinal microbiota, their importance and significance in the health of the intestine are presented. The value of probiotics in the treatment of different digestive conditions is reviewed. The classification criteria of probiotics, their characteristics and value, and the main features of bacterial and yeast probiotics are emphasized. The different types of bacterial probiotic species and mechanisms of action are reviewed. The most currently produced species by the pharmaceutical industry, safety and adverse effects are analyzed.
