Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that affects the way a person perceives and socializes with other people, causing problems with social interaction and communication. Over time, many treatments have been applied to
patients with ASD, but without a doubt, cognitive-behavioral therapy and early intensive intervention are evidence-based therapies that have shown the best results. Early diagnosis is necessary for its effectiveness. This article exposes current aspects related to
the etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of ASD. The design and implementation of an early intervention program for
children with ASD in Belize is a necessity given the increase in these cases. The potential offered by independent local institutions
and the national health system, together with the Cuban Medical Brigade and other organizations, must be exploited in order to
establish this purpose.
