Ureteral catheterization in patients with upper obstructive uropathy

Background: Obstructive uropathy is one of the most frequent conditions of urinary tract. Its consequences affect both renal and body hemodynamics. Objective: Determine the results of ureteral catheterization in patients with high obstructive uropathy at the Celia Sánchez Manduley Hospital in Manzanillo, Cuba, from January 2018 to December 2022. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out. The universe consisted of 124 patients who were diagnosed with some type of upper obstructive uropathy according to inclusion/exclusion criteria. Results: The most common age group was between 36 and 45 years; the main causes of upper obstructive uropathy that led to ureteral catheterization were pyelic lithiasis (37%) in both men (26.6%) and women (10.4%). 42.8% of the patients studied presented complications associated with ureteral catheterization, being bacterial colonization the most frequent. In 64.6% of the cases, the catheter remained in place for less than a month; almost all of them were removed endoscopically. Conclusions: Ureteral catheterization largely protects the upper urinary tract, and prevents progression to renal failure or loss of the renal unit. The catheter was in place for a short time, and bacterial colonization of the catheter was common.
